Easily share and reuse Excel workbooks
Excel Services is a new server technology included in Microsoft SharePoint Server that enables you to load, calculate, and display Excel workbooks on SharePoint Server. You can easily reuse and share Excel workbooks on SharePoint Server portals and dashboards. Your employees can create content in Excel and share it with others by using an SharePoint Server portal and dashboard without writing custom code. You control which data is displayed, and you can maintain a single version of your Excel workbook.
Interact with workbooks using a browser
Excel Services has two primary interfaces; the Excel Web Access Web Part which allows you to interact with a live workbook using a web browser, and Excel Web Services for programmatic access. Portal access using Excel Services means you can interact with workbooks using only a browser. This immediately means that Excel workbooks can now be accessed by employees who do not have access to Microsoft Office but do have access to an HTML-enabled device or browser.
Connect to external data sources
Excel Services supports exploring and pivoting data and analysing Pivot Charts and Tables using a browser. In addition, workbooks can be connected to external data sources, either by embedding the connection string in the file or in a centrally stored data connection library.
Edit cells in a worksheet
Selected cells in a worksheet can be made editable by naming them as Parameters. When the worksheet is accessed the Parameters will appear in a Parameters pane, the values can be changed, and the worksheet refreshed. Note – Excel Services cannot be used to create workbooks. Workbook authoring must be done using Microsoft Office Excel.
Centralize and protect workbooks
Excel Services’ workbook management and lockdown capabilities enable you to:
  • Maintain one true copy of the workbook, created and changed by only a trusted author in a central, secure place, instead of having multiple copies on multiple computers. The true version of the workbook is thus easier to find, share, and use from within Excel and other applications.
  • Protect business models and data by granting users "view only" rights to the workbook.
